Our history
The Wound Care Alliance was formed from the Tissue Viability Nurses Association and the Wound Care Association
Tissue Viability Nurses Association (TVNA)
First meeting of a steering group was in October 2000 and following some
development the TVNA was launched at the TVS conference in Blackpool on 9th
April 2002. At that time although the bulk of members were in England there
were members from Scotland, Wales and Ireland too.
The TVNA was formed with the aim of ensuring that TVNs are included in the
political agenda, to have a professional and representative body and to
development communication between TVN's via local and national working.
TVNA was supported by industry including both wound management and pressure
relieving equipment companies.
TVNA produced guidelines to enable TVN's in their professional role:
- Generic role descriptions for TVN
- Wound debridement guidelines.
- Paediatric pressure ulcer prevention guidelines
- Maternity pressure ulcer prevention guidelines.
- Role of HCA in wound management
- Cellulitis guidelines
- Guidelines for minor bites
- Burns guidelines
- Repositioning patients
- Protocol for the safer management of heavier patients
However the world is continually changing and membership began to ask why is
the TVNA separate from other organisations with similar aims. TVNA responded
to this by holding talks with Wound Care Society (WCS) and Tissue Viability
Society, the outcome being the dissolution of the both WCS and TVNA to form
Wound Care Alliance UK.
